Fruitful PoC at University of Illinois

PenguinIN has successfully presented its wayfinding solution at University of Illinois (UIUC). UIUC encompasses 17 colleges attended by more than 47 000 students and about 2 641 staff members. UIUC’s School of Information Sciences and College of Engineering are among the best in the country, being ranked number 75 in QS Global World Ranking.

Taking into account that UIUC with its 640 buildings extends over an area of almost 10 square miles and resembles a medium-sized city, its campus seems to be predestined for the impressive deployment of PenguinIN’s wayfinding solution that facilitates the seamless experience within educational environment.

PenguinIN’s solution has been the missing piece of the smart campus and ROKWIRE puzzle– an initiative that aims at leveraging latest technology to make students life easier by applying a living lab approach. The idea behind ROKWIRE is: If it works at college, it can work on cities, too. So UIUC campus is considered as a perfect testbed for inspiring technology-related ideas that have the potential to impact on the community of the future.

While preparing for the PoC, PenguinIN detected difficulties with the handover between two WiFi access points which periodically resulted in WiFi disconnection of the mobile device and therefore missing position update. PenguinIN solved this issue by connecting the mobile devices to 3G. As walls of the first floor were covered with metal, sensor readings and blue dot orientation were negatively affected. PenguinIN’s research team seized this as an opportunity for optimizing the blue dot’s orientation by the removal of sensor’s data noise.

UIUC’s team was mesmerized and excited, especially about the multi-floor detection and transition as well as the accuracy of the blue dot and auto-rotation that were granted by PenguinIN. These examples demonstrate how customizable PenguinIN’s solutions are, so they suit the needs and requirements of its clients by tailoring its solution to the specific indoor venue set up.

‘We are proud to be part of this unique initiative, especially as PenguinIN and UIUC share an important commonality: our focus on research. UIUC is among the schools with the highest level of research activity and PenguinIN spares no effort in its R&D activities to meet its objectives: to leverage latest technologies and machine-learning techniques for a best-in-class indoor positioning and an excellent application of these.’, says Omar Shaer, Operations Director – North America.

PENGUININ EXHIBITS AT IOT CONFERENCE AND EXPO 2019

PenguinIN, the leading location of things (LoT) solution provider was proud to exhibit at IoT Internet of
Things World 2019 held at Santa Clara Convention Center CA, USA, on May 13 – 16. PenguinIN’s solution
offers a suite of products targeting operational efficiency, security and safety in large scale and mission
critical venues such as healthcare, assisted living, airports, and shopping malls.

Today and using advanced machine learning techniques, PenguinIN’s LoT platform has successfully
resolved key problems in indoor positioning including multi-level positioning, post-deployment
performance, and multi-technology fusion allowing for GPS-like indoor navigation, asset and personnel
tracking.

“Sporadic, intermittent, and even poor performance of indoor positioning platforms was attributed to
continuously changing indoor environments” commented Omar Shaer, PenguinIN’s Operations Director.
“As a result, we saw the need for a managed service platform where performance is guaranteed long
after initial system setup to ensure the platform is still usable and not orphaned”.

“Small and medium sized businesses are trying to do more with less while enterprise clients are
struggling to ensure that efficiency is maintained across the entire organization.” Says Flora Kawohl,
PenguinIN’s Product Analyst. “Visitors of our booth have expressed great interest in PenguinIN’s
technology and appreciated our hassle free, managed service approach to indoor positioning”.
PenguinIN’s LoT platform is enriched with analytics and business rules platform allowing end users to
identify insights and develop business-driven actions from within the platform.

If we have not been fortunate enough to receive you at our booth, PenguinIN team would love to hear
from you. To learn more, please visit us at www.penguinin.com or drop us a line at

HIMSS19 Conference

PenguinIN was happy to attend this year’s HIMSS. With more than 42,000 professionals attending HIMSS 19, it was great to see that companies from around the world came to provide better healthcare products and solutions. The focus of the event was to advance the safety, efficiency and quality of care, digitization of healthcare, use of Artificial Intelligence, interoperability, data protection, and IT security.

The president & CEO of HIMSS, Hal Wolf, started the event by a keynote speech stating “Now more than ever, healthcare needs a renaissance”. One can understand Mr Wolf’s comment, in light of the fact that healthcare global market is expected to grow to $158 billion by 2022. This would generate a massive opportunity for healthcare organizations to deliver the vast infrastructure required to deliver Healthcare digitization.

A lot of emphasis was directed at healthcare providers needing to invest in the tools and technologies necessary to better engage patients and enhance patient experience, such as:

  • Wayfinding
  • Reducing perceived wait times
  • Recognizing Donors
  • Promoting hospital services
  • Generating revenue with advertising
  • Staff communications

Patients have higher expectations of the healthcare system and the technology that enables them to be consumers – which further raises their expectations. Patients now expect healthcare providers to offer the same kind of high-quality, personalized digital services they experience in their lives as consumers elsewhere.

PenguinIN does address significant parts of the patient experience, and some of the use cases that PenguinIN offers can add real value for better operational efficiency at the healthcare premises, which helps further the healthcare digitization.

June 2018

PenguinIN is proud to announce the successful completion of another great seamless indoor / outdoor wayfinding solution. It was implemented at Yas Water World which is a waterpark managed by Farah Experiences LLC, and is located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Enhancing the visitor’s experience by making navigation seamless is the first step

For the first-time, visitors of the Yas Water World are able to navigate between rides and attractions in the mixed indoor / outdoor theme park without barriers.

On an area of more than 15 hectares of land, with over 40 rides and attractions, seven dining options and much more, the need for a wayfinding solution arose as the opportunity to lose one’s way is easily imagined.

“We believe it is our responsibility to support the visitors to make the most out of their time and to create unforgettable memories at Yas Water World. Our solution provides an interactive map as well as a seamless turn-by-turn navigation with multi-language support.”

(Moe Hasan, product development manager at PenguinIN)

Further potential to enhance visitors’ journey at Yas Water World and other theme parks

There is an opportunity for many other potential solutions to be implemented. These include location-based promotions and notifications, queue optimization, location-based gaming, family & group finder, data collection and rich analytics.

In a following blog article, we want to discuss these use cases and how our solutions support the overall experience of all stakeholders.

PenguinIN announced full integration of it’s Indoor Wayfinding Solution with the Cisco CMX APIs. Cisco’s Wi-Fi CMX platform can be used to provide indoor positioning under dense Cisco-Wi-Fi deployment. “Unleashing the true power of CMX requires an additional layer of customization and integration which PenguinIN provides” commented Dr. Smadi, the head of the regional R & D Lab. PenguinIN supports the delivery of effective RTLS use cases and analytics to ensure healthy RoI on CMX investment.

In recognition of the added-value that PenguinIN brings to the Cisco CMX solution, both companies are discussing joint go-to-market plans and activities

The ability of PenguinIN indoor positioning technology to interoperate with various IT platforms and suppliers is a key differentiator attributed to the multi-technology, vendor-neutral and opportunistic approach.
